RAST Conference – Slovenia and its path towards sustainable development
Slovenian companies across various sectors, from biotechnology to energy, are through innovation actively contributing to achieving Slovenia's ambitious sustainable development goals. This year's RAST conference showcased progress in reducing carbon footprint and transition to renewable energy sources. Additionally, the role of standardization and artificial intelligence, was also highlighted. Especially the latter, which is already transforming work processes, improving quality of life, and contributing to a sustainable future.
At the event, Colonel Robert Šipec, Head of the Sector for Energy Efficiency and Green Transition at the Ministry of Defence presented the importance of environmental requirements in defence sector and how significant adjustments to new environmental requirements are underway and explained how military bases, which currently mainly operate on diesel generators, plan to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels by increasing the use of locally produced and renewable energy in the future. "If we do not collaborate with other countries, we will continue to use diesel, which means we will not achieve our carbon neutrality goals," he emphasized.
Furthermore, a project in relation to reducing the carbon footprint at the Ministry of Defence, led by Associate Professor Mitja Mori from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was presented. The project covered the activities of the Ministry of Defence from 2018 to 2022 and how these activities translate into carbon dioxide emissions. It was stressed that project's goal is to implement a digital tool that will enable the collection of data on non-financial indicators, significantly influencing future investments and Slovenia's positioning in line with European Union guidelines.
